Maurice Abravanel

Maurice Abravanel served as Utah Symphony music director for over three decades. Maestro Abravanel, born in Greece and raised in Switzerland, became enamored by Utah’s majestic mountains and a group of dedicated Salt Lake City musicians. Under his baton, the Utah Symphony grew from a part-time community ensemble to a world-class symphony orchestra. He led the orchestra on many successful national and international tours, brought the symphony to prominence through recording contracts, and was the first conductor to lead an American orchestra in recording all Mahler’s symphonies. His commitment to serving the community helped raise the quality of life in Utah and influenced millions through his musical talent.

Glade Peterson

Glade Peterson was the founder and General Director of Utah Opera from 1978 until his death in 1990. Traveling from his home in the small farming community of Fairview to the stages of virtually every opera house in the world, Mr. Peterson put Utah on the operatic map, singing leading roles in all of Europe’s major opera houses and appearing with some of the finest singers of the 20th century. While Glade’s travels took him all over Europe and the United States, he remained a cowboy at heart and never forgot the peaceful beauty of his native Utah where he loved to watch the sunset while riding. He fulfilled a life-long dream when he returned to Salt Lake City in 1975, founded the Utah Opera and brought the magic of opera to his fellow Utahns. He shared his love for music with people from all walks of life and inspired many with his vitality and enthusiasm.
