KSL TV | Maestro Markus Poschner to conduct three concerts at Deer Valley Music Festival

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Symphony has just announced its Deer Valley season for this summer. Maestro Markus Poschner will conduct three concerts at the music festival. This is a first for a music director in more than 20 years.

The mountains, the sun the bright blue sky  last October, Markus Poschner took in the view of what will be the backdrop for the Utah Symphony‘s Deer Valley Music Festival this summer.

He said he feels at home here.

“I really feel myself connected because I grew up in the Alps, in Austria, Germany, Bavaria,” he said.

Maestro Poschner will conduct three concerts at the festival — Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9,” Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite” and Mozart’s “Jupiter.” He desires to expand the repertoire.

“I think it’s part of our artistic identity here, which is a unique story we have to tell as the Utah Symphony,” Poschner said.

The concerts take place in July and early August at the Snow Park Amphitheater at Deer Valley. Additionally, there will be smaller chamber concerts in the beautiful sanctuary of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

“Magic place,” Poschner said. “You can feel it immediately, these open windows and the view to the mountains. Great acoustics here.”

The semi-circular seating and the religious art and stained glass, the maestro believes, create an atmosphere that lends itself to music.

“In my mind, I’m just thinking how to grow this kind of venue here and to develop it,” he said.

Whether in this more intimate setting or a concert under the stars, Poschner hopes to grow the orchestra’s audience, reaching all ages.

“To create a first-class music festival here, with every type of music. This allies with my personal philosophy of what a symphony orchestra should be,” he said.

Come as you are, said the Maestro, soak in the beauty of the venues and the music.
