Utah Symphony Performs Music of David Bowie with Guest Conductor Martin Herman and Vocalist Tony Vincent at the Deer Valley® Music Festival Featured

PARK CITY, Utah (July 6, 2016) – On Saturday, July 23, vocalist Tony Vincent will join the Utah Symphony at the Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of guest conductor Martin Herman. This symphonic musical odyssey will explore the incredible range of David Bowie’s music including the hits “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Under Pressure,” “Heroes,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Fame,” “China Girl,” and more. Tickets start at $37 for general admission and $15 for youth (ages 8-18), and can be purchased at artsaltlake.org/production/music-of-david-bowie/

An alumnus of Duke University, University of Pennsylvania, U.C. Berkeley, and Stanford University, composer Martin Herman has won international acclaim for his acoustic and electronic performances. The Artistic Director of Bentstrings Productions, Mr. Herman has worked extensively to support the production and creation of new media and sound, serving as co-founder of Downtown Opera, which commissions and performs experimental short operas.  Mr. Herman currently directs the BCCM Laptop Ensemble. Recently, he worked as a composer and music director with the theatre director, Byungkoo Ahn, on “Voyage,” a theatre piece that premiered at the 2013 Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi.

“Having grown up with the music of David Bowie, I am very excited to perform it with such a wonderful orchestra in one of the most beautiful outdoor venues in the U.S. Bowie's death hit me very hard, harder than I would have imagined actually, and I think a lot of us felt that sharply. And when I went back and listened again to the incredible body of work he left behind, I fell in love all over again with the music, not for purely nostalgic reasons, but for its artistry and brilliance,” said Mr. Herman. ”There is such a huge variety of work, great material, and this show captures that scope in the song selections. The show also captures the spirit of Bowie and reach of his music through Tony Vincent's powerful stage performance/vocals and Brent Haven's wonderful orchestrations. It's the perfect marriage of live rock-n-roll band, great material, and full orchestra arrangements that feature the Utah Symphony in all its glory - and all happening at one of the most stunning outdoor settings in the U.S. “

Having grown up in the small city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tony Vincent has emerged to be one of America’s most dynamic modern vocalists. Exposed to rock influences such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones at a young age, Mr. Vincent first recorded a five-song EP, which led to a recording contract with EMI records, and subsequently, two solo albums, Tony Vincent and One Deed, which produced six #1 Billboard radio singles. After moving to New York City in 1997, Mr. Vincent joined the cast of Broadway’s RENT and was featured in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s remake of the film Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2002, Mr. Vincent originated the role of Galileo Figaro in the rock band Queen’s smash hit We Will Rock You in London’s West End. He also fronted Queen itself on several occasions, including a performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” at Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee concert for a live audience of over 1 million people surrounding Buckingham Palace and over 200 million television viewers world-wide. In 2012, Mr. Vincent joined Team Cee Lo Green on NBC’s hit show The Voice, awing crowds with his final performance of The Eurythmics’’ “Sweet Dreams.”

Mr. Vincent says of the upcoming concert, "Singing the music of David Bowie is thrilling— but the chance to perform this material amidst the Rocky Mountains raises the bar.”

This performance is part of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera’s 13th Season of the Deer Valley® Music Festival, which comprises 17 concerts over a 6-week period throughout the months of July and August. Twelve of the 17 concerts will be held on the main stage at the Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater, and will feature popular music such as that of DreamWorks Animation, including songs from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon, and the music of John Williams, including selections from the new movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Prominent guest artists will participate in this season of the Deer Valley® Music Festival, including bluegrass band the Steep Canyon Rangers. Additionally, each Wednesday, the Festival hosts a mid-week chamber concert series at St. Mary’s Church, where the Utah Symphony will perform classical chamber orchestra masterpieces such as Haydn’s “Oxford” Symphony and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9.
